Workday Rising Europe 2017 kicks off today

The European edition of Workday Rising 2017 kicks off today. As last year, BNB is a proud sponsor of this event. So if you are coming to this great event, do not forget to visit us at our booth #403.


As in Workday Rising at Chicago earlier this year, I will also be co-presenting a session on Thursday at 1pm CET with Charlie Yuan. If you are able to attend, you will be more than welcome.

Workday Rising 2017 in Chicago: My take on October 11th and 12th

Workday Rising in Chicago has finished a few days ago. I wanted to wrap up my experience at this event before it becomes ancient history. In my last post, I've reviewed my experience during the first full day at Rising, let me now cover the remaining two days.

Wednesday 11th October started with the Innovation Keynote, delivered by Mike McNamara from Flex. I found this keynote very inspiring. Among the points that made a bigger impact on me was the following:


The key concept behind this idea is that more than technology or any other asset, the best way to secure the future of an organization is to build a great culture, which is the best catalyst for transformation.

After the keynote, I attended several other sessions, which I summarize in the items below:

  • Prism Analytics is very promising. It extends the reach of the great Workday reporting tools to external data, but it is not only that. It is also a huge step forward for the analysis of large volumes of data, as it uses Prism in-memory query engine. Also, the data can be acquired from both external sources and Workday itself, enabling the use of references to other Workday objects to facilitate drill down to the detail. Finally, in Workday 30, a new Data Discovery task is expected to provide ad-hoc data analysis through a very user-friendly interface, enabling all relevant end users to explore the data by themselves without the assistance of IT. However, keep in mind that Prism is being deployed gradually and for the moment is only available for some North American customers.


  • At the Tips and Tricks Theater, I attended two sessions that were very interesting to me as they were focused on Financials and Planning reporting, which I had the opportunity to implement at BNB. The first one was focused on Planning reporting, which was greatly enhanced by some of the new features delivered in Workday 29. The second one covered the new Executive Financial Scorecard, also delivered in Workday 29. Both sessions were very interesting and helped me on doing a deeper analysis of how we could take advantage of them at BNB.
  • My favourite one: Introduction to Workday Cloud Platform. This is the newly announced Platform-as-a-Service offering from Workday, which will enable customers to extend their use of the Workday application. In this session, several use cases were covered, which also give an idea of what we will be able to do using WCP:


    • Create a new task (i.e.: Create Business Cards).
    • Create a page that displays information from Workday and external sources (i.e.: show Google Drive contents).
    • Trigger calculations or integrations using web hooks (i.e.: sending a Slack message).
    • Invoking Workday Mobile App push notifications (i.e.: request your workers ad-hoc information through the mobile app).
    • Define new business processes from scratch.



  • All this keeping one of Workday's most valuable assets: The Power of One. This is because all the applications built using the WCP will be update safe, pretty much in the same way integrations are today, through versioning of the APIs.


  • The last session was a very inspiring one about the Future of Enterprise Software. It was a very engaging session and plenty of interesting views of what the future may bring to Enterprise Software, with the key points around Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality and Platforms.


At the end of the day, it was time for the Appreciation Party, starred by Gwen Stefani and packed with lots of food, drink and entertainment.

Finally, on the last day, I still wanted to take advantage of some of the sessions. The day was quieter that the previous ones as some people was already heading back to their home locations, but it was still packed with content:

  • I learned a lot about the new Plan Template features of Planning in Workday 29. This feature enables an easier decentralization of the planning process by allowing to define worksheets with protected areas and reports, which can significantly simplify its understanding by users.


  • Then I had the opportunity to learn more about the internal Workday architecture, how it evolved and even changes that are currently being implemented in the road to zero downtime. It is not easy to find this information around, and although it is purely informative, I must say that it is an impressive job done by the Workday team. Comparing Workday's architecture to the one used by legacy ERPs is like comparing a rocket with a kart. Just amazing!





  • Finally, I attended a session on User Experience enhancements for Workday Financial Management, although most of the topics were also valid for the entire Workday platform. Another good session, because it did not only focus on the new features delivered in Workday 29 which I knew quite well, but also covered plans for enhancements. My preferred two: improved grid performance and additional cards in the home page.


Workday Rising came to an end with a great closing keynote delivered by Shawn Achor on the importance of happiness and being positive to improve results in every area. You may view a TED talk on a similar topic that Shawn delivered some years ago.

Workday Rising 2017 in Chicago: My take on October 10th

Yesterday was my first full day at Workday Rising in Chicago. It was a day packed with contents and emotions. I had to literally run between sessions to be able to make it on-time and had lunch in no more than 10 minutes. Still, no regrets, it was a great day in all aspects.

The day started with the Executive Keynote in the Wintrust Arena. What an incredible venue and setting to start the day!


If anyone was still feeling asleep, the opening performance made sure this was no longer the case. Nice idea and a fantastic way to start the day with boiling energy.



Then, Aneel Bhusri and Dave Duffield came to stage to start the Executive Keynote. It is always inspiring to see top executives like them having fun at their job. I will not go through all the details of what was announced during the keynote, as it included lots of new features in all pillars. Let me just share what was more relevant for me:


  • Customer Satisfaction has increased from 97% last year to 98% in the last survey. And it is not just a number, it is very to feel this degree of satisfaction when you talk to customers.


  • Artificial Intelligence made its way into the agenda. Ranging from Workday Assistant chatbot to predictive analytics, AI is a hot point in Workday strategy.
  • PRISM analytics also had its own share, after being released back in September for some North American customers. In a nutshell, it allows you to access data stored outside of Workday to generate the insights your business needs.

  • And my preferred one: Workday Cloud Platform. This is Workday's PaaS offering to extend their solutions. It is still in an early adopter stage, but safe harbour applying, it will be made generally available in 2018. What we have seen in the keynote looks promising, not only allowing to extend the application through new pages but also enabling hooks to personalize its logic. I will be taking part in a few more Workday Cloud Platform (or WCP) sessions, so hopefully I will have a clearer picture by the end of the event.


I did not manage to see the end of the Executive Keynote as I had to dash for the next session, for which I was co-speaker.



The session was presented by Uwe Reimer and it went through the Workday Project Billing functionality and a very illustrating demo of the solution. Then, I presented BNB implementation story, which not only covered Project Billing, but also HCM and most of the Financial Management suite. It is always great to share implementation experiences with other customers, not only because the interaction benefits us as Workday customers, but also because as Workday Service Partners we get a better picture of which are customer needs.

Much more relaxed after the presentation (presenting in a non-native language is never easy ;-)), I attended other sessions about Workday Learning, HCM Transformation, Workday Cloud Platform for Financial Management and another customer success story implementing Workday for Professional Services organization. As you may see, lots of contents for a single day.

But that was not all. In this edition of Workday Rising there is a new concept called Braindates, which is basically a marketplace in which customers offer and request experience exchange on different topics. Each session is scheduled for 30 minutes, and it is a great way to know customers with similar challenges to yours.

I had three of these sessions during the day, mostly going through our experience implemented Workday Planning and forecasting reports at BNB.

Finally, I decided to head back to the hotel, calling it a day. Well, almost, the day ended waiting for the result of Argentina soccer match for the World Cup qualifying. We made it (thanks Messi), so it was the best end for a great day.

Workday Rising Europe 2016 highlights: November 16th

Today was a day packed with announcements at Workday Rising Europe 2016, ranging from features just made available last September in Workday 27, new functionalities planned for Workday 28 and future plans for later dates.

The day started with the Executive Keynote introduced by Chano Fernández and Phil Wilmington, and starred by Workday's CEO Aneel Bhusri. Before moving to the announcements, they gave a quick overlook on how Workday is doing as a company. It can be summarised in one word: great. The Workday ecosystem is growing by almost any measure, including number of customers (both in HCM and Financials), revenue, employees and consultants.


This kind of growth can only be achieved through innovation, and here is where Dave Duffield's vision of the Power of One comes to play. You may have heard this multiple times, but it is true nevertheless. Having a single version for all customers has a tremendous impact in the agility in which Workday can implement enhancements and innovation.

During the keynote and some of the later break-up sessions, many of these current or future innovations were discussed and explained in detail. I'm pretty sure the importance of them will vary from customer to customer, but let me summarise the most significant ones from my point of view.

Externally Sourced Data Analytics

You may be well aware that Workday acquired Platfora back in July. This will bring Workday analytics to a new level, as this technology will allow customers to build analytics not only on information stored in Workday but also coming from external systems. This will bring incredible value to customers, which in many cases will be able to reduce their investment in third party BI solutions.

This capability is announced for Workday 29, although, as the rest of announcements, it is subject to the Safe Harbour Statement. Still, it is exciting that the Workday ecosystem may be just a few months away of enjoying these capabilities.



Workday Planning

One of the hottest new features included in Workday 27 is the new Workday Planning module. Particularly interesting is the new Worksheets feature, with allows user to make adjustments to planning in an spreadsheet like user interface. Worksheets are not only embedded into Workday applications, but also are synched with the data in them. This solved the eternal problem of handling different versions of spreadsheets, very well illustrated in this video.


The new Worksheets feature also comes bundled with an embedded instant messaging solution, that allows users to discuss about data in its context. This functionality will be extended to other modules in future releases.




Workday Learning

Another long awaited module that was released in Workday 27 is Workday Learning. This module is not just Workday's solution for the enterprise learning needs, but just a whole new approach to it. In Workday Learning, the creation of contents is collaborative and mobile. Every employee can contribute to the organisation by delivering her own contents, even using a mobile phone. Of course, through the business process framework, new contents can be reviewed and curated so that standards are followed.




Data as a Service

This is a new opt in service that Workday provides to its customers without any additional cost. It will allow customers to share some aggregated and secure data with other customers so their performance at several KPIs can be benchmarked against market standards. 

As much as 250 customers in the US have already opted in for this service since its announcement in September at last Workday Rising in Chicago. This is another show of the power of collaboration in the Workday community.

And much, much more

Many other announcements were made (Workday Assistant, Workday Designer, Campaigns, Onboarding, Customer Central, etc.), but honestly I want to take a little rest before tomorrow. Not only it will be packed with a lot of new sessions and networking, but we will also have the appreciation party, and I want to make the most of it!

Ready for Workday Rising Europe 2016

Tomorrow at 5.00 pm Workday Rising Europe 2016 will be officially kicked off.

This will be a very special Rising for a number of reasons. In first place, it will be my first Rising. Even though I have followed previous editions by streaming, nothing beats the real experience.

On the other hand, this edition is in Barcelona, a beautiful city which I have the chance to visit quite often (Barcelona is only 2h 30' away from Madrid by train).

And last, but not least, because BNB is Bronze Sponsor of this event. This not only means we will have a booth in the exhibition hall, but also that I will attending with 5 BNBers willing to make the most of this event.

Welcome to my Workday blog!

It took me a while to take the final step, but finally I decided to start my Workday blog. I have been blogging about PeopleSoft for the last 9 years, but today most of my professional focus is around Workday.



I have been following Workday news almost since the beginning. When I learnt that Dave Duffield and other great ex-PeopleSoft people decided to create a new company, I couldn't be anything but excited.

During these years, it was not easy to find information about Workday, but as the company became bigger and many former PeopleSoft colleagues and friends joined the company, information started to flow.

In the end, Workday started operations in Spain at the beginning of this year. This was the chance we were waiting for for so long. To make a long story short, BNB soon became Workday partner and customer, and we started our training on the solution.

In my blog I'm going to share my personal experience and view on Workday solutions, together with some tips and tricks when possible.
